I couldn't find another spot for this, so I thought I'd start this new thread for general gaming news. Use this thread to share and discuss non-GW gaming news and info. Here are some interesting items I found on Slashdot... Microsoft's 5000th patent covers online spectator mode. Will Anet have to pay them for using observer mode? Game designers tussle over the best way to win over the female gaming audience. Who's a winner and who's a loser in the online gaming boom?

talk about grind in a game... "For beginners, sewing and mending socks is the only way to increase experience and upgrade,"

Game designers tussle over the best way to win over the female gaming audience. I'd say The Sims is a pretty good bet, since it already have more female than male players. My girlfriend and I play it a lot, though she is much more skilled in managing her sims, and I mean insanely skilled. If there ever was a Sims World Cup, she would be a shoe-in for the victory. Oh, and next week Elder Scrolls IV is released. I aim to finish it in less than a year...

have you ever wanted to crucify some online players for their behavior? Boingboing reports it is possible in one game.

I wonder if someone will complain that it's cruel and unusual punishment and try to put a stop to it?

It's much more likely that some will object to it on religious grounds.
And I think they might have a point. That's pretty risky business. I get the whole Rome/Crucifixion connection, but, despite being an agnostic, I find myself offended by this. No matter who you are or what you believe, you likely know that Christ's crucifixion is the central metaphor and mystery of the Christian faith. This will piss off a lot of people.
So - even though there's a part of me that loves irreverance, this freaks me out. I dunno though. Is it any worse than when Eric Idle sings "I always look on the bright side of life" while hanging from a cross? That makes me laugh.
I would love to see some other way to subject players who misbehave to the scorn of the rest of the community though. That would be great!

I would love to see some other way to subject players who misbehave to the scorn of the rest of the community though. That would be great! How about burning their character at the stake? That was something romans loved to do. Have them tied to the stake for several hours of scorn while they wait for the designated ignition time. The character can't be res'ed until a designated time period has passed... They could add all sorts of sound effects as the character is slowly charred... On second thought, that might not go over so well either...

A pillory seems better and perhaps a little more appropriate than crucifiction. I mean, it kind of reduces the impact of what the romans did to people when you magically recover after seven days. Whether or not you are a Christian, crucifiction still happened and was cruel and deadly.
If the point is to limit someone from playing and to subject them to humilation, put them in a pillory. Players should be able to throw stuff on them and mock them just like they did in the colonial era. In fact, we could TOTALLY have a pillory in Lions Arch. It would absolutely make sense!

I just love the idea of someone being publicly called to account for his/her in-game behavior. There could be a "time out' chair next to the Frog in LA for all I care. It would be fun. I wonder how many people would earn time-outs from the things they said to others during time-outs?

In Counter Strike they had a way for Admins to punish people. You could make them a Llama. Anytime they typed something it said "Baaaaaaa" and there name was changed to Llama.

My ATI 9600 Pro handles Oblivion, just barely though. It's a very nice game, easy to see why they spent over 5 years working on it.

Oblivion = nice game. nVidia 6600 barely runs it in 800x600 mode, so much of the great detail is lost The interface could use some tweeks. I have the horse now! Some of the cool things. You don't set attributes. As you play the game your attributes adjust to your playing style. Example: Play with a bow alot = better marksmanship. Talk to people = better social skills. When you shoot something with a bow, the arrows stick in the monster. It is funny to watch a goul come after you with 3 arrows sticking out of his body. After killing the monster, you can retrieve the spent arrows from its carcus.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl has finally been released. Has anyone heard? No, and you know why? Because for some lame reason the company behind it released it on the same day as Oblivion. I predict it will be discounted to $20 in no time. I did find one review. They liked it but said it's more of a simulation than a game. Almost too realistic. EDIT: On second thought, this review may be an April Fool's prank...

Microsoft has acquired Lionhead Studios, whose founder, Peter Molyneux, is one of the best-known independent video game developers in the business. The acquisition was announced jointly Thursday by Microsoft Game Studios and U.K.-based Lionhead, the developer of such hit titles as "Fable," "The Movies," "Black & White" and others.

Here is Penny Arcade's take on the acquisition. (I think the link may be to the current comic and not necessarily the one that is relevant to this announcement.) Edit by BD to make the link permanent to the correct comic

Interesting! I hope this means good things for Lionhead. I really enjoyed Fable, although I couldn't muster myself to play "the lost chapters" because you couldn't import your character/quest data. Edit: Found while searching my local paper's site for something. Click HereOh my! I suppose it was just a matter of time. Hopefully that means the lame Wa's who do the dirty pelvic thrusting dance to harrass ppl will find somewhere else to go. Note: If someone wants to tell me how to make my link embedded in the text like X's, feel free to help me out. EDIT 2: BAH! I can't even make the normal link work. Edit by BD: Fixed your link for ya Aeron

Yeah I think it's so funny when I do the outside view of my character and see a bunch of arrows imbeded into his shield and a few sticking straight through his body, but with minimal health lost . I also like how the added blood decals, it's a lot more realistsic then that little cloud you saw in Morrowind. Right now I'm saving up for the fastest horse in the game.
