I know that feeling as I will be gone most the weekend of the WPE. Well, there is some possible good news for you Fate, Anet never said "the weekend of March 24th" that I know of, they just said it starts March 24th and didn't specify the ending date. But if it does indeed only last the weekend, then I'll miss almost all of it too

Apologies for the double post... Gaming Steve podcast episode #43 features an hour-long interview with Jeff Strain. Despite the incredibly annoying theme song, it's a good listen. Skip ahead to the 3:25 mark to get to the start of the interview. A couple of tidbits: The cheap runes bug that caused the game reset was ultimately caused by a bad network card. Also, they plan to integrate voice chat into the game itself. In other news, Anet has posted details about how this weekend's preview will work.

www.guildwars.com/events/ingame/factionspreview.phpHighlights: Your FPE Experience The Factions Preview Event could begin with your creation of a Factions roleplaying character in an area of Cantha called The Marketplace. There, a series of NPCs will provide you information about the factions of Cantha—The Luxons and the Kurzicks—and will assist you in getting to the capital city of the faction that you choose. Once you arrive in the capital city, you may explore the areas of the world that are opened for this event. You may also undertake the four Factions missions available in the FPE or engage in an exciting new form of PvP, the alliance battle. Here is a bit of information about the mission types that you can experience: Story Missions: Experience two of the missions that let you participate in the quest to stop the traitor Shiro Tagachi. Visit the outposts for Eternal Grove and Gyala Hatchery to jump right into the storyline! Competitive Missions: There are two teams within a competitive mission; one each representing the Kurzicks and the Luxons. Getting into the mission is quick and easy: You simply click "Enter Mission" and you automatically are partied with other members of your faction in either Ft. Aspenwood or The Jade Quarry. Competitive mission objectives vary from mission to mission, but here is an example: The Kurzicks are nearing completion of a new sonic weapon, called the 'Vengeance of the Gods,' that will give them a significant advantage in the war. In the Ft. Aspenwood competitive mission, you will join the Luxons in an attempt to break into the Kurzick fortress and destroy the weapon before it can be completed, or you will join the Kurzicks and attempt to repel the Luxon invasion. Both sides will be competing for control of amber mines, as amber can be used to strengthen fortress defenses, increase the speed at which the Vengeance of the Gods is constructed, or increase the power of the massive siege turtles that the Luxons are using to break into the Kurzick fortress. During the mission, you will encounter members of the opposing faction, as they are trying to take control of the same amber mines. As with any competitive mission, although you will encounter enemy players, completing these missions relies more heavily upon killing NPC’s or monsters rather than engaging members of the opposing faction in combat. Should you choose to engage the enemy faction, you will find that the gameplay mechanics are different than elsewhere: There is no penalty to those who are slain (no death penalty) and those who die are re-spawned quickly. Try Alliance Battles! On the other hand, you might want to bring in your existing PvP characters, or create new ones, to take part in PvP on the Battle Isles. Or you can bring your roleplaying characters to join an alliance battle in Cantha. For alliance battles, naturally your guild will want to ally with others within your faction. By speaking to your faction ambassador in your capital city, either House zu Heltzer or Cavalon, you can join the battle to help your faction gain control of outposts. The combat is 12 versus 12 consisting of 3 groups of 4 players each playing against one another either collectively or as individual battle squads. The world map will visibly change as alliances conquer more of Cantha with their victories and the winners will be recognized within the game. MOST IMPORTANTLY: # Your guild must choose a faction—Luxon or Kurzick.Looks like we need to decide before Friday AM so that those of us "sick" on Friday can play appropriately.

Is there a difference between them right now? I don't really know anything about either so flipping a coin is as good a solution as any.

Can the guild switch factions? or are we stuck the whole weekend?

Doesn't matter to me, but it may be best to pick the one that HeEt and LoV go with, so we can try the Alliance features.
Pretty sure I read somewhere that a guild can switch factions at any time, but I don't know if we'll be able to this weekend.

Kurzicks: Highly religious and made up of talented artisans and crafters, this culture resides in a petrified forest (the result of Shiro's death wail 200 years ago). Their buildings are highly ornate and masterfully crafted out of the gigantic fossilized trees. In general, these people respect artisans, titles of nobility, and the established order of things. Luxons: Once a seafaring nation, this nation has had to adapt since the sea has been turned to jade (the result of Shiro's death wail 200 years ago). They travel across the petrified water using huge magical walking machines. Because of this transition, they have become a mostly nomadic culture, using easily portable materials to make shelter able to be picked up and moved at a moment's notice. As a group, this culture respects strength above all else. As for switching, I have no idea. That wasn't in the Q and A. Especially since this is just a preview, I know I'd personally be fine with Inda/Officers coordinating with Guilds we like (LoV, HEET, etc) and picking a Faction so we can test out Alliance missions with them. EDIT-Great minds think alike. Eld's is just faster.

Gaile said in todays chat (3/22) that the alliance feature will NOT be enabled for this weekends event. All guilds will be in an alliance of their own. At release the alliance will carry the name of the lead guild.

I'm guessing that they won't activate the additional 2 character slots for the FPE since that feature will only be for those that have Factions enabled on their Tyria accounts. I'll have to delete the ranger I just created sunday night over my PvP slot...

Well, I consider the lack of the full Alliance Feature for this weekend to be a MAJOR mistake on Anet's part... So, now instead of having to have 8 BGN on for GvG, we'll have to have 12 on for an Alliance Battle? Probably won't be a problem for this weekend, but still... Or do Alliance Battles work like a random Auto Match with other members of the same faction? As in, we'll field out team of 4 and then get random paired with 2 other teams of 4? And I'm assuming that Nameless Fiend will have go PvE for awhile, then die to be PvP again, then back to PvE... and so forth... although I would forgive Anet for the alliance thing if we got the 2 free character slots for the weekend. EDIT: Ok, I re-read the 'preview' notes, and yes it does say that your guild will be in an alliance of 1... and that you talk to you Faction Head for the Alliance Battles... so it looks like it will be some-sort of random match of 3 teams of 4... hmmm...

I checked out the guildwars.com home page today to see the new cinematic trailer. They've also posted a new update. I downloaded it just for the heck and logged in to see what's up. I never left the guild hall, but we apparently now have a "faction" rating listed under our gvg rank and there's a new tab for "alliance" that shows our guild emblem as the head of our own alliance. There are also 4 new npcs hanging out in the corner that I usually skulk in when I'm afk. 2 Luxons and 2 Kurzicks. Can't do anything with them just yet (except say hi) but at least one of them seems to shout randomly and they do look cool.
I'm sure there are other things, but I didn't have time to look at anything else.

From guildwars.com yesterday:
Faction Head Start Event: Day of the Tengu 21 April 2006 When is a Head Start more than a head start? When it's an event! The Guild Wars Factions Head Start Event begins on April 27th, at 7:01 GMT (12:01 a.m. PDT). Want to find out what's in store during this 24-hour celebration? Click here for just some of what you can expect at this pre-release party!.
Head Start Event: Day of the Tengu
Join us for the Guild Wars Factions Head Start Event, and participate in the exciting Day of the Tengu celebration!
As you know, the Head Start allows access to the lands of Cantha a full 24 hours before the game’s global release. During those hours, Cantha is hosting a special event—Day of the Tengu—where players celebrate the first anniversary of peace since the cessation of the Tengu Wars. But all is not peace and harmony even now, for the day’s events are threatened by a return of the vile Naga.
In Cantha, you are invited to complete a series of quests in honor of the Tengu, quests that also aid in the effort to beat back the erstwhile invading forces. If you are successful, you will earn Naga Fangs, which you can exchange for unique rewards! At periodic intervals throughout the course of the day's event, be sure that you visit Shing Jea Monastery, where you will find that, if you have a sufficient number of Naga Fangs, the fangs will be converted into wearable Tengu Masks. These coveted items—customized just for you—will be unique across all Guild Wars campaigns!
The Head Start Event and the Day of the Tengu quest series are available only to pre-order customers of Guild Wars Factions. Want to get in on the action? Check with your local retailer, or pre-order Guild Wars Factions online and obtain an access key in time to participate in the event.

Some quick info from Galie Gray from The Guild Hall & GWOnline forums (sorry, no link): There will be an announcement on Monday (4/24) that we'll be getting the ability to make 2 bonus characters for the Head-Start period. These are not character slots, and they cannot be deleted once used. These characters lock after the head-start ends and you have 10 days to enter a retail key. Once a retail key is entered, the characters become character slots that you can do what you please with. And our current characters will be able to get Tengue Masks. EDIT UPDATE: Official Word on Extra Characters for Head-StartCharacter Slots for Head Start Event 24 April 2006 We're happy to let you know that if you own Prophecies and have activated a Factions Pre-order on your account, you will be able to access your two new character slots during the Factions Head Start Event. The slots will become available and will have access to Cantha from 12:01 a.m. PDT (7:01 GMT) on Thursday, April 27th through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 28th (6:59 GMT on April 29th). After the close of the Head Start Event, Canthan characters and Factions content will not be accessible until a retail key is activated on the account. The character slots will enjoy a "grace period" of ten days, to allow you to enter your retail access key and make them permanent.

According to the Alliance tab on the Guild window in-game, there's a "significant problem" with the Alliance system and it has been disabled. They anticipate a fix "within the next day or two."
