if only librarians and academic scientists made enough Sollo -- we are just ordering a few extra pieces and frankensteining my current machine -- should hopefully be back up this weekend or early next week.

Very similar to what I just put in my box Inda... it's fantastic, you're going to love it. It's so awesome when the rivers actually flow and shimmer and you can see the fish swimming in the ponds Don't forget the awesome new flat screen monitor though... seriously, they are a bite on the pocketbook but hell, how often do you need a new monitor? My last one is still working fine after 6 years (except for the spot where my son put a magnet on my screen).

Machine sounds great Inda. I had to send mine back to the manufacture after many calls they finally sorted out new memory, new motherboard new graphics card. Sodden thing still lags, but it works So good luck with that... I feel your withdrawal pains. Fate will pay for the rounds when ye come back on line lass. Cheers

I picked up a Dell Ultrasharp 24" Widescreen LCD a couple months ago, for about that price and it's a fantastic display! I later picked up a Dell 22" widescreen (not ultrasharp) and there is definitely a difference in picture quality. But the 22" was half the cost so I guess you get what you pay for. Oh, and yes, kids need cloths and food and those things should take priority over toys.

Dang kids don' treally need clothes and food do they? What I wouldn't give for just one day where that thought doesn't cross my mind....well, I guess I wouldn't give up the kidlet or the nephew, so I'm stuck. I've threatened to stick the kidlet in the freezer so she'll stop growing (she'll be 6 soon). However, she told me that wouldn't work 'cause she'd just eat all the food in there! Dratted smart-a$$ kid (of course, I smile inside when she comes up with things like this). Though I think my 15 year old nephew eats more than the rest of us combined.... Hurray for Inda and her shiny new computer parts!

Well during the after turkey day sales I did get a 19" lcd samsung -- at a little over $100 -- and the major cost was X not sleeping while standing in a loooooong line. I stayed home with the babe

alright so double post --
First reaction -- OMG this is beautiful - -and always a fun bonding experience when hubby and wife rebuild a machine. When you set bios together. When you re-detect and install drivers and then....
A toasty smell comes from the case -- it and won't reboot. And you open the case and the power supply is the warmest thing in the case --
yeah so -- how's your night going?

Yeah. Computers don't work well once the smoke escapes. They need that smoke to function.
In my experience, the most likely source of the escaped smoke is the power supply. This is easy enough to test; simply try turning it on. If EVERYTHING is dead, then the P/S is probably what popped. If some things come on but the system doesn't boot, then it's probably the motherboard.
That is the reason I don't like building my own. I always have but I never like it. There is something to be said for pre-built systems. They are built and tested before you get them and the warranty ensures that they continue working for a period of time. Most of my geek friends swear that the only way to buy a system is to build it yourself, but I think you can shop around to find perfectly good systems to meet your needs.

Did I mention I have bad karma with Mobo's?
This new one had extreme hate for the floppy drive -- b/c it tried to set the connector on fire...so back it goes!
So with law of average -- how many bad mobos can I get in a row? So far I'm 3 for 3 ....

And that's why I like to deal with brick and mortar shops... I can get my stuff when I pay for it... take it back for a replacement and get a new one all in the same day.

The FSB on the processor is very impressive. The challenge that I've seen is finding memory to match. Should be a speedy system either way though!

I didn't even know that 2ghz fsb's existed! Sweet! The next challenge will be to find memory that runs at that speed so you don't have a bottle neck.
When I get home, I'll be installing 2 more 750gb 7200rpm drives making a total of 4. I'm going to try striping and mirroring them for 1.5tb of super fast raid protected storage. Should be fun!

Tis good to find a bit of humor in our struggles, but we do feel the pain pain of dealing with technology (some of us more than others). Here's hoping we all stay up and running, 'cause I'm loving the posts here but loving the guild-chat even more.

I think the 2ghz fsb is something they get by some kind of hyperthreading technology. It just sounded cool.
Anyway this post is now appropriate in that I may be gone a few days form the game. I tried to save my windows installation but alas it is not easy going from an intel to an amd architecture and the blue screen of death keep appearing. So starting from scratch. Hopefully not gone too long.

Reloading the OS is always fun. I'm in the process myself. At least I have a laptop to use.
I got the RAID 0+1 (Striping+Mirroring) going last night. There was a technical glitch that took me 3 hours to solve (almost thought I had very expensive paper weight for a while there) but now I'm almost up and running. Vista performance ratings are pegged at 5.9 except for the memory which is 5.4.
Now for the sucky part; loading all my applications again and getting everything just the way I like it.
