I'm hoping this is a good thread wherein to post a question since I'm a relative first-timer. I'd like my ranger/mesmer to be an interrupter but I'm having a hard time figuring out the timing. It seems that as soon as an enemy sees me, it casts a spell/hex, etc. and I just don't seem to be able to be effective at interrupting spells and actions. Anyone have any tips to share?

1- If using a bow, you can use your "off hand" equipment slot as an extra inventory slot... whatever you equip there doesn't function, but it moves out of a valuable inventory slot. 2 - Don't forget to periodically check and see what's in your off-hand slot... I was carrying around a stupid focus item until I was level 12. 3 - Rangers, plan the location of casting Spirits before battles... the range and lifespan of them are phenomenal. One spirit can often get your through three or four good battles and the energy cost is often regenerated before your first battle. There's no reason not to have a Spirit hanging around helping you out for every fight.

OK, first you have to be aware of what your skill interrupts and what skill the monster is using... Ex: Signets are not spell, so Power Leak will not stop it. I thought Diversion should stop spells, but the monsters seem to be using their Heal Area uneffected... Second, you need to be aware of casting times... Trying to counter a mesmer interrupt is basically impossible... Some mesmer hexes (backfire) are easy to stop however as they have a 1-2 sec cast... Also all spells have 'aftercast'... I've seen some debate as to whether you still get the effect of your interrupt during the 'aftercast', Ex: While the monster just cast Heal Area and healed itself, you get the Power Leak off during the 'aftercast' so the monster still looses 13 energy (not sure if this is true or not). Finally, Mesmers just have to 'stand around' some times... as your skills are conditional and reactive, you sometimes just gotta watch the monster and be ready to 'twitch' to get the interrupt off... Fortunately you can kinda of predict what the monster is gonna do... Is it a monk and taking damage? then a heal is coming soon... Is it an elementalist? Fire? Getting swarmed? Then it will probably use Lava Front or at higher level Inferno... Basically, the mesmer is an 'advanced' class as it takes timing to use the interrupts and a familiarity with all the skills to know what you can interrupt... However, in a given area (Ruins of Ascalon, Shiverpeaks, Kyrta, Magumma Jungle, etc...) the monsters all basically use a given sub-set of skills and you can adjust your skills appropriately (which is true for all professions, and how you should be playing the game anyways).

Thanks for your insights. It's just like me to go and pick a hard class to play as a noob. But I really love the idea of providing support to my other teammates. I'll keep working on it. Part of the problem is likely that I need to learn some more skills so I can have more options in battle. Now, if I could only figure out how to back off a warrior who gets right in my face and starts hacking away in PvP.

Any warrior that tries to go up against a skilled memser without monk support is doomed to find themselves face down in the dirt. Hints on taking down the warrior with mesmer. Realize that the warrior has limited energy and relies on melee. Shutting down a warrior is as follows:
1. Get some good armor. If you can, run to Yak's and get some armor before PvP in Ascalon. Not via mission either, as you'll get those dreaded XP's and you'll level up. 2. Get a vigor rune from a guildie if you don't have one. 3. Go into the arena at max level, i.e. just when you turn level 10 for Ascalon. 4. Pack Empathy to give back some of that melee damage. 5. Pack Conjure Phantasm to give the warrior some well deserved damage over time (DOT). 6. Pack Energy Burn to rob them of the energy and give them damage for even having the energy in the first place. 7. Watch for the use of the healing signet. The warrior takes double damage when using that, so pour on the quick damage during that time. 7. On your ranger side use a short bow with lots of damage. 8. Don't try to heal yourself. A good monk should be watching your health. Concentrate your energy on damage and not on self healing.
Update: Hammer warriors are your counter, as they will disrupt and knock down. In that case, see X's suggestions below.

Now, if I could only figure out how to back off a warrior who gets right in my face and starts hacking away in PvP. Pin Down/Ethereal Burden/Imagined Burden + Dodge/Lightening Reflexes... 2 quick options... there are many others of course...

Thanks a lot. You guys have given me some really intriguing strategies to think about. I can't wait to get back into the arena and give them a try.

in addition there are spells that take coordination like pacifism which stop warriors dead. (Pacifism prevents target from attacking for 10 seconds I think). Another spell, whose name I dont remember, causes target enemy to lose all adrenaline and maybe energy as well whenever he/she attacks (or maybe its when you're attacked). Anyways, keep gaining spells and you'll eventually find some wonderful ways to kill warriors quickly.

I've had that pacifism spell used on me a few times, and it really does take the tension out of the ole' bow. It stops me in my tracks. My plan is to hunt around for more skills while trying to gain as few XPs as possible for the next little while. That way, I'll still be eligible to compete in the Shiverpeak Arena where I've had some experience. Thanks again for another great tip. (Tru Kitty thanks you too. He hates it when I get creamed and leave him all alone to face the other team.)

Hello BGN,
POSSIBLE SPOILER
This question isn't so much for me as it is for my husband. He's a lvl 19 W/Ra, and he thinks he screwed up in the temple of the ages. I hope this information is clear, since you're getting it second-hand through me (he's forum-phobic). It seems that he paid 1K to travel to the land of the gods (Balthazar). He got killed there (went alone, like most warriors might), and now that he's back at the temple, he can't seem to get any of the statues to offer him the quest again. Is that how it shakes out? Do you only get one chance at that mission?
Thanks for your advice and insight.

You can go multiple times. I beleive you have to kneel at the shrines and the spirit comes out to talk to.

I dint know if it is the right place to post and I didnt want to start a new thread just to ask a question. Since it as to do a bit with gaming tips, I will ask it here. Last night Jez told me about a voice over game program that some of you use for GVG or PVP. He told me the web link but I don't remember it. I would have send a personal message to Jez but I don't find it in the forum member? Could someone refresh my memory plz? And thanks to all who where GvG last night to let me in First GvG match against that European spike team was way over what I can handle. And then, maybe it is because it was my first GvG match ever. A+

Hi Miriel, I, too, need to get that chat software and to learn how to use it. I believe it is called ventrillo. I think Jez said www.ventrillo.com, but he wasn't sure about that address. Fun GvGing and PvEing with you last night.

since I'm 12 and have almost no rights my dad said I couldn't set up vent or ts so I'm going to miss out. It stinks not having your own computer, Maybe one day I'll get my own when I'm old enough and play with full capabilities.

The BGN only area has a thread called "Guild voice chat servers". It has some basic info and you can post for additional help.

Thought I'd update this with some GW command line parameters: -perf = shows performance statistics in upper right-hand screen -password "yourpasswordhere" = automatically enter your password and advance to the character screen.
i.e. GW.exe -perf -password "bgn4ever"

Also of note you can install two copys of Guild Wars but one must on a diffrent drive letter (i.e. partition or hard drive) this allows you to log in two accounts at the same time if you wish. (Note this will NOT allow you to play two characters on the SAME account.)

Just tried this and it doesn't seem to work. When I ran the downloaded installer it detected that I already had a copy and wouldn't install to a different location. Then I tried copying my current folder to another drive and the second program, again, detected that another copy was installed and wouldn't run. They must have "Fixed" this. I guess I'll still have to keep my laptop handy for logging in twice... How about a request for a tip?
Is there an easy way to skip directly to new messages here? So far it appears that the only way to know if I've read something is to re-read everything and see what looks familair...
