Maybe half the people have the same problem that I do. I'm not registered and don't know how to register. It's prolly in the newspaper but I've never read one of those before either...

Just Ask A Librarian: www.sos.state.mn.us/home/index.asp?page=12&select_faq_by_faq_cat=2#37Q: How do I register to vote? A: Fill out a voter registration card and return it in person or by mail to your county auditor or the secretary of state. Voter registration forms are available at county courthouses, city halls and other public buildings throughout the state, in many telephone books, in your state tax booklet (in even-numbered years) or by downloading a copy by clicking here. You may also register to vote when you apply for or renew your Minnesota driver's license or state identification card. Q: Can I register to vote on election day? A: You can register at your polling place on election day. You will need one of the following to verify your residence: * Minnesota driver’s license, learner’s permit, identification card, or receipt for one, with your current address * Tribal ID** * If the Minnesota license, Tribal ID or MN State ID has a former address, you may bring a recent utility bill* to use with your license * “Notice of Late Registration” postcard * U.S. passport with utility bill* * U.S. military photo ID card with utility bill* * Prior registration listed on roster at former address in precinct * Oath of a registered voter in precinct ("vouching") * If you are a student, you can use... o Student ID, registration, or fee statement with your current address o Post Secondary Student photo ID with utility bill* o Post Secondary Student ID if you are on a student housing list on file at the polling place * Someone who is registered in the precinct where you live who will vouch for your residence

Ouch! As the former director of a voter registration and get out the vote campaign, I MUST help Sollo vote in his first election! :-) And, in fact, Sollo you are right. Most people never vote for the first time because no one asks you to or tells you how. Candidates NEVER ask first time voters to vote for them because they don't think they'll actually show up. So a lot of people fall through the cracks. Happily, Inda's research has discovered that MN is a same-day registration state. Woot! All states should do that. All you need to do is go to your local polling place on election day and sign up! Here's the URL to find your polling place: pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us/

Well, since everyone is being so helpful, let me drop my other 2 problems on ya...
1. Voting day is a work day and I work 35 miles from home. It's a 45 minute drive each way. I didn't see the poling times anywhere. If they are open late then I should be able to get there but I'm fairly certain that I won't be taking 2 hours off work to vote and burn a third of a tank of gas.
2. I'm 100% totally ignorant of politics. If I vote, I will, quite litterally, be checking random names using absolutely NO criteria what-so-ever. I don't know the difference between a democrat and republician. The two words have as much meaning to me as the difference between "Mary" and "Sue". And since I have no knowledge of the people running, my votes would serve no purpose other than to "Randomize" things.
I've actually had this discussion with friends in the past that firmly believe that everyone should vote and at the end of our conversation they found their exception.
I believe that people should vote if they have any sort of clue but I have absolutely none when it comes to public office.
I actually did vote once at another address many years ago. When they caught us both standing over one ballot as he was trying to educate me as to who the candidates were and how to make the correct decisions, they nearly kicked us both out of the poling place.

Ok Sollo -- it is now my mission to get you to vote. Q: What offices will be on the ballot in 2006? A: 1 U.S. Senator 8 U.S. Representatives 1 Governor and Lieutenant Governor 1 Secretary of State 1 Attorney General 1 State Auditor 67 State Senators 134 State Representatives State Judicial Officers Q: When are the polling places open for voting? A: For state elections, most polling places open at 7:00am; a few polling places in small townships located outside the seven-county metropolitan area may open as late as 10:00am. All polling places close at 8:00pm. Q: Can I get time off from work to vote? A: Yes, Minnesota law allows you to take time off from work without loss of salary or wages to vote during the morning of state elections. (http://www.sos.state.mn.us/home/index.asp?page=12&select_faq_by_faq_cat=2#27) Also project vote smart information on ballot measures and folks running for office. /first thing I did when I turned 18 was register to vote and was thrilled to vote in my first election (and have missed only a couple of special local tax measure votes) //2nd thing I did when I turned 18 was donate blood ///voting is the blood of our democratic-republic

Looks like the St. Cloud paper also has a voters guide. They sent surveys to all the candidates and have posted their responses. I always tell people that it's also ok to NOT vote for certain offices if you really don't know. IE, sometimes I go in and vote for governor and congress and legislature, but skip the judges part because i just don't know. That's OK! www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/special_packages/election2006/vguide/statewide/

It is done. I picked from the list that you guys gave and the list has half R and half DFL. When I got to the poling place I found that there were a whole lot more people on the ballot than were listed on the supplied web sited.
A friend of mine says that Democrats are generally morons so when I had doubts, I picked the R candidates.
The entire back side of he ballot was a complete waste of time since they all had only one person to vote for...

Half R and half DFL? DFL stands for Dumb Effin Liberals perhaps? LOL
Actually on my ballot I voted for the ppl I knew and didn't vote at all if I had no opinion. However at least half of the ppl on my ballot were running uncontested. Maybe next year I'll just put my name on the ballot against one of those guys... who knows maybe I'll get a desk job for a couple of years LOL

Quint if your state allows write-ins BRAVO and more power to you! This state doesn't allow write-ins -- doesn't give 3rd party candidates a chance -- but finally will allow alcohol to be sold on election days Congrats to you as well Sollo! -- Even though I don't necessarily agree with your friend -- each party has the same chance of having morons

Did y'all see the election where a dead woman won? She received 100 votes (I think all write ins) and beat the incumbent. The city is honoring the votes and now will follow whatever procedure to pick a replacement. This was for a minor position in a small town, but its still fairly funny.

I didn't see that. Very funny though. The Colbert Report was funny as hell though. He really was depressed about the Democrats taking such a huge lead. Tonights Word: Sigh And that was all he said on the subject.
