The past 24 hours of GW have been extremely depressing for me -- and this doesn't include the many losses during GvG (at least I lost with friends). I am extremely tired of the level of racism, sexism, homophobia, and inappropriate use of swearing I've seen in GW as of late. It's not from the TEG alliance community -- but the GW community as a whole. I know better than to turn on my local chat -- but sometimes I a) leave it on by mistake after a mission/arena b) I really just want to help folks in a given area with their questions.... but starting with the one team that dropped the "death to N-words" on us...and then the asshats in random today... I just don't know. Plus the other thing - the English language is a beautiful thing -- including the swear words and they should be used when appropriate and not just flung by an inexperienced twit.... I've done a couple of searches both via search engines and in research databases to see if I can find an answer as to why...but there's only so many "Rule Violation" reports I can fill out... it's just depressing....

That's one of the reasons that I, too, tend to leave the local chat turned off. It can be frustrating and annoying but it's not worth letting people upset you for it. Perhaps if you put a positive spin on it. Look at it from the point of view that you need the bad to fully appreciate the good. It's the variety of experiences that help you really appreciate what's good in life. In a way, the bad apples are doing you a favor. Without them, everything would be blan...

Death to Nercros...isn't that kind of stating the obvious? But seriously, I see this all the time as well. I also keep local off most of the time for that reason. (Also, my kids like to play/watch me play and I don't want them to see all that either) I agree with Sollo, that you can't let it get you down though. I do not like to stereotype kids, because we have a lot of young people on here that are great assets to the game, and act in a mature, respectful manner. But there are also a lot of kids that use on-line game environments to act out there frustrations in life without fear of retribution. To be fair, there are probably a lot of not so young people who fall into this category as well. Unfortunately there tends to be this sort of mentality found among members of just about any society. But that is why there exists great guilds like ours that allow somewhat of an escape from that unwanted eliment... just too bad everyone must be subjected to the whims of others in the common areas. All the more reason to have more BGN group events

Unfortunately the world of online games is a sad place. I've just spent some time in RA getting shouted at in leetspeak, and people bragging about how they pwn the other team. My usual reply is "It's RA you t w a t". Since pretty much all I do nowadays in GW is GvG I have pretty much blocked out all the shittalk. If LOV encounters team that do that we either don't reply or ask them why they are being rude. Usually their team's leader will tell their own to shut up. But sometimes I would like to meet these people in real life, to see what they really are made of.

On a slightly related topic: It would be really nice to see some kind of Aliance Chat guideline. I'm sometimes apalled by how off color some of the conversation sometimes is there, for a public channel. There's just no way to know how many people there are under 18 and who's parents may be standing over their shoulder when someone suddenly starts blathering on about how big the Rt breasts are and comparing them to the elementalists; Or just outright foul/offensive language.

The past 24 hours of GW have been extremely depressing for me -- and this doesn't include the many losses during GvG (at least I lost with friends) Playing with BGN is always fun. However, to avoid all those problems I tend to stay out of large cities unless I need to. I believe that people play this way because they think its either expected of them or makes them cool. I really could never accept that so many people thought these things or would normally act like this (even if they were without repercussion anyways)

I'm sorry the GW game community has been getting you down, Inda. It bothers me, too. The part that seems pradoxical to me is that the more offensive, non-PC comments seem to be coming from the younger players. (Just an impression, I have no way to verify that.) I thought today's youth was more enlightened than that. That's why I enjoy playing with the mature (and the maturely behaving) people of BGN, and why it pains me when someone leaves the guild. We have a great group here. We have our share of risque and teasing comments, but we know where the line is, and have no desire to cross it. I, too, keep local chat turned off unless it's absoultely necessary to turn it on. Unfortunately, I've had to turn off alliance chat a time or two as well. Edit: Part of the "why" may be short memories and lack of firsthand experience. On the reality show Black White, produced by Ice Cube, a white family wore makeup to pass as black, and a black family wore makeup to pass as white. Just reality TV, yes, but it was an interesting social experiment, letting each family see the world from a different perspective. One telling moment came when the teenage son of the black family (in his "white" makeup) hung around with white kids who used the N-word a lot. He didn't react. When his parents asked him why he didn't say anything, he said that word didn't bother him. They really had to work hard to get him to realize that that word was extremely offensive and painful to many generations of people. Maybe it's symptomatic of the times, that as we move further and further from a time when the word "Watts" doesn't resonate with people, they forget what it was all about.

Just for the record I almost never have alliance chat on nor use it. I preferred when it was for officers only. The useless spam on it just annoys me.
However I do find it funny that sex and big tits and stuff is such an issue for some people. Not just here, I've seen it on a lot of sites about GW and games in general. Welcome to the world of games, it's inhabitated mainly by boys with a newly found libido and no outlet... (Alright, that may be an overgeneralization fueled my a friend of mine that works for Activision...Free games yay!) However I am from sweden, or as someone put it: The home of the millencolling orgy...

Being raised in the sixteis andseventies, we would never use the N word. But it seems that in the 90s and 00s, it is used all the time. And usually by black people. So maybe the value of the word has lost its meaning on todays youth.
They are also mostly kids who don't know better. Or have problems who need attention and they know that people are shocked by it.
However, I do get a little upset when I see people using bad word for mexicans since my daughter is mexcian.
However, I try not to let people who do not know better or don't care ruin my game. And I too keep the local chat off unless I have to have it on.
As for alliance chat, I don't have it off but I might as well. Most of the time I don't read it

Well, tbh most of the other guilds in our alliance are 18+ only anyway, and while I can't speak for other 'young 'uns', I probably contribute quite a lot to the "off-colour language" production. Oh yeah, while I'm at it I apologise for any off-colour language on vent servers, hopefully my accent is strong enough to mask it out

I began to think about what to do with Alliance chat the instant I heard someone from MEAT applaud the way it was 'properly spammy'. And I agree it needs to get toned down a notch. Not several notches perhaps because there is no level of decency that is universally acceptable and also as free and relaxed as a community channel should be. It just needs officers to put a cap on it. Reminders to the people listening that what they say does not fall on deaf ears.

I think we see now why ANET at first limited it only to officers....

I would just like to comment that all of the regular members that I have had the chance to spend time with either in game, in chat or on the board have all been very respectful toward me. I have had one experience with a member (not to be named) that made some rude remarks to pug members....I feel it is important to remember that when you wear the BGN cape, you represent the entire guild and what it stands for. This instance was not too big of a deal, but thought I would through this opinion out there for what it's worth. ~Bain

I agree. One should never judge someone based upon a group clasification. One should wait until they find out about the person personally before making judgements. I usually have very bad luck with PUGs but once in a while I hook up with an exceptional one. One time I hooked up with a PUG and got bonus for Thunderhead Keep. Last weekend one player in my PUG thought it would be funny to grab the crystal off the thorn pedistal and then pretend not to know what to do with it and refused to put it down so someone else could open the Thorn Gate. We all ended up dropping the mission and regrouping back at town to try again after wasting half an hour getting almost to the end. I had a very strong opinion of that player but that had nothing to do with his PUG status.

I have also had some pretty good pugs in the past. But don't get me wrong, I still do not hold pugs in high opinion. Still this is no reason for name calling....mature attitude is one of the things that sets our guild apart from a lot of the other players in GW. You can even call someone down, if need be, without resorting to childish insults, or vulgar comments*. I guess this was my point, more than my opinion of the quality of pugs in general.
*I am not referring to the fun banter that we have in Guild Chat, so far I think everyone I have heard knows where to draw the line there.

Man, scorching n00bs is one of my favorite pastimes. I especially love the ones that insist you do something their way, when 7 other ppl tell them it won't work. Next favorite is the one that says he's been playing for over 2 years, but has no clue what the WPE means.
I don't, however, usually call them childish names, and I never quit a party because of one idiot. A good team can overcome bad leadership, so I may argue with the guy but I never sabotage the mission we are on.

Umm...yeah. I was thinking the same thing. I've been playing since the game was released for retail and didn't know what WPE was until Google just told me "world preview event." Then again, I've been playing a primary Necro since day 1 and the first time someone asked if I was a SS Necro (and promptly rejected me from his ever-so-delicately-skill-balanced PUG when I said I wasn't), I didn't know what that was without Google either. I don't read GW forums on the net very often to be up on all the pro-palyer lingo etc (except the BGN site, of course). Does this all mean that I'm still a n00b?
PS--I DID go elite farming with my favorite henchies in Tyria a bit this week and now have the Spiteful Spirit skill...although I'm not well practiced at using Julie in a full support-only role...and it's a little hard to practive that with henchies, I'm finding!

October of 2004 was less than 2 years ago. Anyone that says they've been playing for over two years had to have been an alpha tester, and thus would know what the WPE was. Also the E34E which is where I first fell in love with this game even though I didn't get a chance to play it.

I've been following this game since some game website posted its announcement. I even think you can find an e-mail of mine on their website (somewhere). However, I have problems keeping up with the new terms. So I usually just ask people through PM what it means. People will get angry and cuss at you, but it only takes a few tries until you get lucky and someone gives you the answer. Especially if you're the class type they're looking for. Either that or I go play with Miriel and ask him all my questions.

I get this all the time... the other day someone was selling a particular quest item that was interested in farming... I asked him, in PM, a question about it. He replied. "you're a N00b, go home." lol...I admited to being a "noob" and asked for an answer anyway. Most will answer in PM if you are polite..those that won't prolly don't really have the answer anyway.
