I was reading this article on money.cnn.com about soem very bad scenarios where oil goes to $262 a barrel. money.cnn.com/2006/01/27/news/international/pluggedin_fortune/index.htmThis is interesting. Maybe I should buy some oil companies stock. I think I will make suer I keep my car at least half full. Also, there are a lot of oil wells that don't get used in Texas and Arkansas because they can get the oil cheaper abroad. Maybe not any more. I have a feeling the artic refuge will be opening up soon....

I know what you are talking about Aeron, Venezuela and Hugo Chavez wants to sell cheaper oil to poor people in the US. The white house is not amused... Yep. Found the article in my hometown paper www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chicago/chi-0601050105jan05,1,3381340.story As for the buying stock in oil companies, it's probably a good, if volatile, bet financially. My guess is, that just like with the tobacco companies, their will be a time very soon when everyone hates them, they get get investigated for ripping ppl off, and they lose a bunch of $$$. That's the time to buy, because the prices will only go up from there. That said, I can't bring myself to invest in something I find so troubling. My money's in other stuff (including renewables.) It seems quite unlikely that drilling in the arctic wildlife refuge will do much to reduce our dependence on the sketchy regimes overseas. There's not that much up there, it's not very economically recoverable, and it'll take a long time to get here. It just doesn't seem realistic to drill our way to energy Independence. Instead of using natural resources we have very little of, why not use what we have an abundance of? Wind, sun, grain, and ingenuity.

Also the rich control all the oil so the rich get richer....

I can't even believe that people don't seem to care that the white house have given oil companies the right to drill in the world's only arctic rainforest. That's a totally unique environment.

the problem with windmills is the cost/gain problem. They cost a lot to put up and don't produce much energy per day. If I remember correctly, it takes over 5 years to earn back the cost of putting up a windmill. Solar energy is dependent on sun and in places like Cleveland (supposedly the country's cloudiest city) and Seattle (country's rainiest city) you don't get a lot of energy from one unit. This doesn't even cover the cost of producing solar units.
How this stacks up to the gas industry I don't really know. However, they are more efficient and environmentally friendly sources of energy.

Front page of my paper today: Exxon posts the biggest single year profit for a US company EVER. And yet we: 1) subsidize them with tax dollars 2) let them drill in OUR national parks, monuments, and wildlife refuges 3) weaken environmental laws so their refineries can benefit 4) let them get off the hook for not paying their restitution for the Exxon Valdese oil spill. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I live a few hours north of LA and it's at $2.79 here for the cheap stuff. Not sure why it's even more than in LA (always is), but the Peoples' Republic of California has some screwy rules about lots of things--petroleum products are in that bin.
Just started watching the DVDs of season 4 of 24! No spoilers!! :-P

Have you reached the part where the terrorist plant the nuclear bomb on the st. Andreas fault line and half of California falls into the sea?

This topic reminds me of some of the NASA space probes I've been seeing on the Science Channel lately. Apparently they can power the entire probe with less energy than it would take to run a hair dryer.
It seems to me that as energy gets more expensive, the world will migrate more toward energy efficiency.

Do you think the President's people are reading the BGN forum?
Funny that his speech last night was so much about gaining independance from Middle Eastern Oil. Note: that doesn't mean we'll be independant from Venezuela or Africa.
And, of course, his solution is giving tax dollars to car companies for research. As opposed to tax credits to consumers for purchase or (god forbid) raising fuel economy standards that have barely changed since the '70s.
Why do I get so worked up?!?!?!

The best part of the the speech was when they showed Senator Clinton trying to smile sincerely. She was not successful.
At our house we have instituted "No Drive Sundays" to save gas and money. Sundays we used to go out and hit the Chinese buffet across town and then hit the electronics stores to look around, etc. Now we stay home. It actually nice to stay home and not do anything special.

But in this case supply and demand is working.
The oil companies supply the fuel and they demand we pay more. See it works out perfectly for them.

The rich get richer....
Here is a conspiracy theory the Nigerian Rebels are being paid by the Oil Companies to make noise.
Also Iran doesn't really want nukes. They just want more money. Every time this yahoo in Iran speaks the price of Oil goes up and Iran makes another billion dollars. That is what I call rewarding bad behavior.
