Landscape photography is the art to let see to other via your picture only what you wanted them to see. In the case of this sunset, I zoom in the most I could on the sunset itself. If you look at this wider angle picture (still not very wide compare to human vision) of the same sunset you will notice that the colorful part of the sky is just a small portion of the actual sky. | | wide angle | zoom in |
It is also important that you take your exposition metering on the sky itself, not on the ground (this maybe or maybe not possible depending of you camera) as it is the sky you want to see. Digital camera does wonder to capture those moment as you can watch all the sunset from the beginning to the end while taking picture during all the process and keep just those you took when the sky was at is best. Perhaps my problem is having my light meter set to the ground or land and not sky. I'd imagine you're on a slow shutter speed to let lots of light in? Do you use manual settings or automatic?
Sorry to pepper you with questions. I'm hoping to take some amazing pictures next month on vacation to show off to you all.

I almost alway use aperture priority (you chose the aperture and the camera chose the speed for you) for landscape picture as speed is not an important factor (landscape don't tend to move very fast). They are some exception like when I want to make special effect on water fall like this (this one is took with a 1 sec speed shutter and I am using rocks as a tripod): | Cairns, Australia |
For sunset, the higher the sun is, the more likely you will have a shutter speed high enough to not use a tripod but also the more important is to take light meter in the sky as there is a big difference in the quantity of light that come for the sky and the land. In that case if you take the light meter on the land, you will see detail in the land and the sky will be blasted and you wont see much color except for an overly white blue. If you take the light meter on the sky, the land will be almost black and you will have beautiful color in the sky like this: | Athens, Greece |
**WARNING, I deny all responsibility for: bad picture took while using those advice, Angry husband or wife waiting for too long until their counter part finally took a good picture, and any injury or death resulting in the usage of rocks as tripod. And for any BGN sunset freak, here are some more sunset pictures. Enjoy!! | | | Santorini, Greece | Athens, Greece | Santorini, Greece | | | Northern Territory, Australia | Northern Territory, Australia |

All these pictures are amazing! My grandfather has been a professional photographer all his life, his basement is filled with pictures, and yours are as good as his! You've even taken pictures of some of the same things. If you have any lighthouse pictures, could you post them?

Hmmmm, My selection of lighthouse is poor in digital format, but I got one. Too bad the weather wasn't cooperating. Both pictures was took at the same place, just different direction. I wish the lighthouse could have that sky in the background... | | Tasmania, Australia | Manifestation of Dwayna? |
I don't know what to say Aeron, I guess I am lucky. *thinking seriously* I AM LUCKY. Coming up next, Wildlife. A+

Those are incredible pictures- and I do have to say Australia is incredible. The town of Cairns isn't all that great, but that waterfall you found certainly is. Also, I assume you stayed around the city of Cairns while in the Northern Territory? If so I really wonder if you have any pictures of the Great Barrier Reef.

I unfortunately don't have any picture of the great barrier reef. I spend 3 day on a diving boat, did 3 scuba dive and many hours of snorkeling, but there was a cyclone going on. So, I didn't took any above water picture because of the bad weather, and I did not take any underwater picture as I had no underwater camera . However, I do have a friend who did the same diving trip and took some underwater picture. I will ask him If I can show you some. I can say that the great barrier reef is one of the beautiful thing I ever saw in my life. As for the northern territory, I was in a 4x4 camper around Alice Spring. Here some wildlife (and some not so wild) pictures took around Australia and Greece. Enjoy! | | | | Public cat, Greece | Public cat, Greece | Blue Butterfly, Greece | Small lizard, Greece | | | | | Small turtle, Greece | Koala, Australia | Desert eagle, Australia | Common Kangaroo, Australia | | | | | Possum, Australia | Pademelon, Australia | Tasmanian devil, Australia | Wallaby, Australia | | | Wallaby, Australia | Flying fox, Australia |

wow you certainly did see a lot of wildlife.
by the way, i ask about the great barrier reef because thats where I learned to Scuba Dive. Ended up chasing a white tipped reef shark for 30 minutes. I only wish I had an underwater camera that could go 30/40 meters deep. So beautiful.....

That Tasmanian Devil is awfully cute. Why in the world did WB turn such a sweet looking little critter into such a freak? Miriel - gorgeous photos of the Outback. A friend just returned from a trip there and he said that in the middle of the continent the population is so sparse and development so relatively non-existent, that you could look up into the sky at night and see the space shuttle pass by every 90 minutes or so. The sky is that clear and brilliant at night!

Those animal are scavenger with a powerful jaw. When they eat other dead animal they don't leave a trace of it as they eat everything (bones included). It got the "devil" in is name from the rare occasion in witch they eat in a pack. It apparently make a lot of crushing and kinda barking sound as they fight each other for the best part of the dead body. Add to that that they are half red from the blood of the carcass, and I am sure you can see why WB did make Taz like that in their cartoon. As for the clear night sky, you just have to come to Canada. We have plenty of sparse population and non-existent development area here. A+

Okay - so I was totally clueless about the 'cute' little Tasmanian Devil. Everyone can stop laughing now! Thanks again, Miriel, for the great pics. Next time I'm in Canada I'll try and find some wilderness.
