For all the Tolkien fan out there. I you loved the lord of the ring trilogy, you must give a try to the Death Gate Cycle from Margaret Wies and Tracy Hickman. The first book of seven is a bit long to jump in (I did get hooked only in the last 100 pages), but this is a marvelous series. Has for other book I read, well they are almost all in French except those D&D book which the translation is horrible Oh and I remember a good book that I read in college: Animal Farm by George Orwell It is a funny and unfortunately true representation of human personality by animal. Very good. A+

Okay, so far I'm about 9 chapters from the end (not reading all at once). I hate to make judgements before I'm finished with it, but so far it's not that great. The entire book really is just leading up to the 7th one. It's kind like going to elementary school, 1 year you learn something, the next year is like a big review/preview.
So far I've been reading around 6 hours, I'd guess around 8 total to finish it. The ending better be really good.

I did find this one sort of slow-ish... but it does really pick up at the end, just about where your at Yoko...

I just finished this morning. I enjoyed reading it, as usual, but I agree with Yoko that nothing much happens until the end. And even that was mostly build up into the next book. Definitely makes me look forward to the next book, but made this one feel a little....transitional.

********NOTE, POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!****************** ********READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!****************** ********THE BOOK WAS GOOD THOUGH!****************
I just finished it as of 5 minutes ago. Took about 8-8.5 hours as I thought.
Nothing like waiting til the very end of the book for anything of vast importance to happen. It was just a transitional book I think. As good as I can say, a cliffhanger ending, and it dang well had better not be very long til the 7th book. I forgot most of the 5th book while waiting for the 6th one. I suppose I would've been more suprised about what happened had my brother's friend not shouted it over the phone the night it came out. Had I been in that position in the end, I think I would've done things slightly differently. A very good read nontheless, however it's did show signs of just being a bit of a 'sell' for the next book. I'd bet that the 7th book outsells all the others, just as this one outsold #5. I'll still buy it, but I have a good idea what'll happen. Still be interesting to see how it does though.
Final verdict- Great read, much better read if you already know/love the series.

Great thread! I'm currently reading "Truman" by David McCullough. Great book about a great president (I'm old enough to remember when we had them). My reading habits run to history, historical fiction, sci fi, fantasy, and the occasional intelligent horror tale. My literary type favorites are John Steinbeck, Herman Woulk, Saul Bellow, and Mark Helprin. Totally off topic and possibly impertinent, the only thing I've found missing on this board is a good Firesign Theatre thread.

Just finished Life of Pi last night. And realize that I'm probably about the last person on earth to do so. Absobloominlutely hated it! I recognize the author's talent for storytelling, but I love animals too much to say that I "enjoyed" this novel. This read was for my book discussion group, so I'll have to go back to the text and re-read parts, something I don't look forward to. To think that the person who picked this book called it "light" and "fun." Good grief! Miriel thanks for the tip about the series that reminded you of Tolkien. I will definitely investigate. And mthomas, if you like historical fiction, check out An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iaian Pears if you haven't already. It's one of the best of that genre I've ever read. Love this thread too.

Yes - definitely check it out yourself. I can appreciate the book from a distance, recognize the author's talents, but the content was very uncomfortable for me. It might not be for you.

Aerynrox, couldn't agree more about Instance of the Fingerpost. Kinda like that Japanese film where you see the same events from different individual perspectives. Love it when I learn new stuff AND get powerfully entertained at the same time.

Well during my trip away yesterday I remembered I had been giving £30 with of Waterstone Books Gift Vouchers from my credit card company (lovely prezzie) so i poped in to one of 3 stores in Newcastle (Greedy aint they!) and picked up 4 books. The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice Resident Evil Genesis by Keith R.A. DeCandido Resident Evil Apocalypse by Keith R.A. DeCandido. Both Resident Evils are the novelization of the movies by Paul W.S. Anderson. I got those books because i liked the films, im a fan of the games plus I love the novelization of the games/films to which I have most of the other books from the series. As for two two Vampire Chronicles books. I wanted them for the simple reason of my old ones are badly damamged (Iv had then since they were first published, but alas they are not First Prints ) so needed to be replaced. So Im currently reading Resident Evil Genesis then moving on to Apoclayse and then to Interview With The Vampire and finally The Vampire Lestat. Plenty of reading whilst I have no net Also a question for Inda perhaps but to whcih you all are welcome to answer. Have they published the collection of Frank Millers Sin City in one book? We have the collection here but in a range of books which is very over priced at £18 per book. Tal

Well, I don't have access to BIP (Books in Print) from home so I'll have to check at work-- but right now what I'm finding, in the way of collected stories, via WorldCat (a world wide library catalog) is
Frank Miller's Sin City (includes: 1. The hard goodbye -- 2. A dame to kill for -- 3. The big fat kill -- 4. That yellow bastard -- 5. Family values -- 6. Booze, broads, & bullets -- 7. Hell and back.) Milwaukie, Or. : Dark Horse Books, Edition: 2nd ed. Pub Year: 2005-
Because it lists all the ISBN individually I think it's a boxed collection -- but I can't be sure. (ISBN: 1593072937 (1) :; 1593072945 (2) :; 1593072953 (3) :; 1593072961 (4) :; 159307297X (5) :; 1593072988 (6) :; 1593072996 (7) )
When I get to work tomorrow I'll double check BIP and see if it really is a book box set and if I can track down a seller of it.

Finished Off Harry Potter last week, and this week have moved on to Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card.
BTW, Miriel, I bought the first two books in the fantasy series you recommended. I'm saving them to take on my vacation next month.

Ooooh. Orson Scott Card is one of my favorites. I've got Shadow of the Giants in my cue right now. Speaker for the Dead is GREAT!
Right now I'm rereading the Chronicles of Narnia. Haven't read it since childhood and since I'm being bombarded by movie trailers for it I figure now is a good time.
Haven't decided yet what to bring on my trip. I need something fun to read but not so fun and easy that you breeze through it in an hour. Any recommendations?

Well, I once mentioned An Instance of the Fingerpost in this thread, and I stand by that recommendation. It's historical fiction, an engaging mystery that's not simple but is fun and accessible.
If you haven't read The Alienist by Caleb Carr yet, I'd also recommend that and it's sequel (can't remember the title - Angel of Death, maybe). They're also historical fiction/mysteries, and they are interesting because they are written about characters who use forensics and profiling to solve crimes at the turn of the last century when both of those methods were brand new.

I too have finished Harry Potter. Gotta say I was surprised at the ending. But thought it was a very good read. Not as good as the last one. Really looking forward to the next one to see how Rowling gets herself out of the corner she painted herself into.
Got the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy book back out and have started back on that.

I currently started reading the 'advanced' copy of the 2nd Abarat book by Clive Barker, I'm really not sure how I got it, but it was free. The pictures are wonderful, however being an advanced copy, there's no color, and still a few typos. Still a very good, albeit strange read. Wish I could find the first one around here.
