As some of you may have noticed, I havent been in the game the past week or so. This is because I have extreme lag issues to the point where I can clean my room before a single map loads, I lag through entire battles both in PvE and RA. I've tried running a power defragmenter as well as reinstalling the game. Neither has worked and it only leaves me frustrated and unable to play.
If you're thinking its ISP issues, I'm on a college campus and the lag appears to be the same even during the down hours (such as 3am, 10 am, etc).
Since I figure I'm going to get asked anyways, heres a partial list of specs for the computer:
Dell Inspiron 8600 Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) Pentium M processor 1500MHz 512 MB Ram
If anyone has had the same problem or knows a possible way to fix it, your help would be greatly appreciated

Here are a few things to try. 1a. Delete gw.dat 1b. Defrag your disk 1c. run gw.exe -image. This will give gw a non-fragmented data file. 2. run gw.exe -dx8. This forces the program to use the DirectX 8 api's. 3. run gw.exe -perf. Look at the performance numbers and see if it is a framerate or network IO issue. 4. Check your speed at www.dslreports.com5a. Start taskmanager. 5b. Look at the Processes tab. 5c. Kill processes not needed. 5d. If there are any processes you don't recognize, google them. A good place to research tasks is www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/Hope these suggestions help.

I would get 512mb more of memory. I have been having lag issues but when I minimize GW and then restore it, they seem ot go away for a while. It could be a lot of things. Asya has said a lot of them. It xoudl be hardware. Failing network, video cards, memory, etc. Did you change/update Virus software? Do you have virsus software? If you do, turn it off. If not, check to see if you have been virused. Also, you might want to check for ad-ware. There are some free ones out there that would check and remove stuff. Can you take you PC to another place (i.e. a friends house) and check it there? Could be someone changed some settings on the collecge network.

If Asya's suggestions don't work I would highly suggest testing the connection out elsewhere on campus.
Not that it's the case necessarily AD -- but if they've been having a problem at your Uni w/ students and illegal downloads the IT dept could have very well done some reconfiguring that is messing with your connection. And if it wasn't the Uni -- if your state has a consortium that provides internet for the education institutions in the state it could have been done at the state level for a region or for a Uni. I know the RIAA is pushing Uni's hard to crack down on students and have heard a few Uni IT folks here talk about it...

that 1500mHz processor probably isn't doing wonders for you, but I'd only replace that as a last resort.
--Sorry didn't realize it was a laptop, that might explain why it's running slowly, but it shouldn't be running that slowly, it might be your connection if you're in a college campus. *shurg* wish I could help ya a bit more then this.

Hey Ad, I had the worst lag ever on my Dell Inspiron laptop and it was the temperature. My fan just wasn't able to keep the the computer from overheating. So, I would use ice packs from the freezer. You know, the gel kind you put in a cooler? Yeah, I wrapped those in a dish towel and put them under the harddrive. To see if this is the problem, get your computer nice and laggy and then touch the harddrive. If it's hot enough to fry an egg, it's probably a temperature issue.

I'd check on Aeron's advice. I had the same problem a while back, the game got real laggy. Got a new fan for the cpu (had to switch it because my watercooling almost broke down) and now I'm back at 60 fps.

just bumping this thread so i can find it again (search function apparently doesnt like me). I have a few days on my hands to try and get the ol' beauty back up and running again.
Here's the speed test results from Asya's website
5295 / 4577 (Kbps) (646.3 / 558.7 KB/sec)
Also, how do you run the gw.exe file with the -image etc? Do i go into the actual run file and change the name or do i go to the shortcut?

Append it to the command line specified in the shortcut.

Just go to c:\Program Files\Guild Wars and run "gw.exe -image". I wouldn't add it to the shortcut because -image only needs to be executed once; otherwise, each time you start GW you could be in for a long wait.

Just running through your suggestions for good measure... no real lag issues unless it's server wide.
Have a question on the Dat file though. Is it safe to delete the file it's self or just delete the contents? Looks like I've accumulated a little over 3 Gig in files there.

As far as i can tell, the dat file is simply all of the information that computer has tried to access about guild wars. This would include maps, monsters, graphics, movement patterns, skills, all of your characters, heroes, weapons etc. Deleting this file only removes the information from that computer and in theory would need to be redownloaded the next time you needed the information. Its for this reason you get large download times the first time you enter a map. Also, if you couldnt delete it, that would suggest that every time you got onto GW from another computer, it somehow connected to your "home" computer to access your game information.

As an update... played today with an ice pack under the computer. Really annoying playing on a 45 degree slant, but it did the trick. Much thanks for all the tips! I'm really excited to finally get back into the game, and to see what happens for GW 2. Hope to see/bother you all again soon

Tis good news AD, btw the key is left in the secret spot... shhhh They do make coolers which you can put under the laptop, worth the minor investment of $20 or less if you find a sale at Best Buys or Circuity City

Make sure you always have a backup in the freezer for those longer missions/quests. I frequently had to run to the freezer for a refill. :-)
