I tried some WvW for the first time yesterday afternoon, and.....had absolutely no idea what was going on. lol What I gathered from monitoring chat was that it was a bad time to be in WvW because Stormbluff was outnumbered by HOD. HOD kept sending zergs and wiping us out everywhere we went. I died ten or twelve times over the course of about 90 minutes. Things seemed incredibly disorganized, but I don't know how you overcome that when you have newbies like me introducing themselves to WvW all the time. There was some chat about making vent mandatory or you "get kicked off the server" which was misguided. I suspect that part of my troubles were that even though I got bumped up to lvl 80, I still haven't unlocked lots of my ranger skills and so didn't have the best combo for use in WvW. Just some thoughts.

I've actually stay away from WvW so far because last time I went in I got stuck and it took me 30 minutes to figure out how to leave. I wandered around aimlessly... not fighting anything until I got bored. When I have some spare time I'll try and get an answer for ya if nobody else gets it by then.

No worries Xaja. I don't really have any questions. Just wanted to record my impressions after trying it once. I couldn't figure out how to leave either. lol. In the end, I just logged off.

My experience was good, we pwnd most all of our objectives. It did get a bit laggy so I did die twich due to it. Once was a fall due to lag during a view point I climbed to get credit for.

Until last night I was kind of take-it-or-leave-it regarding WvWvW, but now I love it. I guess it was the combination of getting enough skills, some trait points, semi-decent equipment, as well as a better understanding of the goals, map and my abilities and limitations on my character that did the trick. I really enjoyed a lot of the back-and-forth struggles, even though I knew nothing much was being accomplished. It was fun to assault a structure, get beaten back but not (always) killed, run back to our base and get on the mortars, cannons, arrow carts etc., then chase them back. The major assaults are pretty frickin' epic. Even when we were doing poorly points wise, the fighting was almost constant and we had a lot of good pushes.
I spent some time also soloing enemy Sentries and Yaks and guarding ours, and also did some 1v1 harassment. I liked playing on HOD because at least last night, the battles were not far from the waypoints.
Probably if you're new and feeling lost, the best thing to do is just follow the groups of green dots on your map, especially if they're lead by a Commander icon, which is blue, and stay to the back of your lines unless you can take a pounding. In big battles I typically just attack close targets and try to get to high ground on our most vulnerable flank. Throughout the game, I almost constantly have my "show enemies" button pushed and am scanning 360 degrees, looking for red letters floating on the horizon. You can easily get caught unaware by 50 enemies rolling up behind you, because they won't make a sound until they attack. Also, you often just can't see very far, so as soon as you see a lot of red letters coming at you, you need to either immediately run away, or get into position to fight. At least one speed boost is pretty vital, IMO.
I'm not sure how it would work out, but it might be fun sometime to get a guild group and see what we could do. To stay together and work as a group, I'm guessing we'd have to focus mostly on controlling supply camps and lines near a waypoint. I guess one of the biggest obstacles would be just getting everyone through the queue.
Regarding Ranger Skills, I have been running a longbow and a sword or axe + warhorn (Call of the Wild is invaluable for the 15s Swiftness). Other skills are: Troll or Heal as One for the heal, Sharpening Stone, and the two sigs that grant toughness and 10% speed boost, with Rampage as the elite. I'm going to start experimenting with maybe trying to drop a few spirits or summoning a wurm before combat starts (so I can swap in my sigs) in non-siege battles, such as at supply camps and Sentry posts. You'll probably want to have at least one bear equipped if not two, because pets tend to die very quickly in big battles and bears have the most survivability.
Regarding how to leave, I'm not sure! Every time I've played, I played until I exited the game. When you log back in, you'll be in LA, so maybe you can get to LA from the WvW map...? If that's not the case, maybe you can leave via the WvW icon in the top left corner. Will have to check that out.

Regarding my mention above about trying to use skills such as spirits before combat starts, then swap in other skills, I don't think it will work unless the cool-down is much shorter than the duration of the skill, which is probably never the case. You can't activate a new skill until the skill you're replacing has cooled down. So, if you cast a spirit, you can't replace that skill for 60 seconds, by which time the spirit will end.
