I know this is a noob question, but can rangers charm any creature they want? or are they limited to a certain area? Well, not the best place to ask to question, but I'll answer anyway. AFAIK, there are only a handful of creatures that can be charmed: Strider (KoA)/Moa (RoA); Melandru Stalker (KoA)/Lynx (RoA); Warthog (KoA/RoA); Snow Wolf (RoA)... however there are at least 2-4 other animals that might be charmable: 1) Grass Spider, 2) Fern Lizard, 3) Bear, 4) Dragon? From what I've seen, the animal has to have a green (neutral/friend) name to be charmable; in the case of the bear, I've only seen red (hostile) names, but that won't stop people from trying to charm it. I have no idea about the Dragon, someone posted a screen here I think, but I don't remember who... Each animal is genreally found in a specific part of the world, and the animal will aggro to you while it is being charmed... if you survive the aggro and don't kill the animal while it is being charmed, you'll have a new companion. You only get one companion at a time, and you'll have to sell your current companion to a pet dealer before charming a new one.

or take the charm animal skill off in town/outpost I believe that is simply to stop your current companion from traveling with you, but when you re-equip you'll still have the same companion.

Excactly ;D I really want to make Morbid a Necro/Ranger...and I want to be able to charm that Spider! That would be cool. They only other creature I could settle for woule be the Fern Lizard (possibly), and the Dragon. It'd be great if there was a black panther though

From what I've seen, the animal has to have a green (neutral/friend) name to be charmable... I can confirm that that is not true. If an animal is the appropriate type, and it doesn't use some skill to interrupt your charm attempt, you can charm it, regardless of it's starting text. I've charmed red text wolves before in the Shiverpeaks. It worked just like charming any green text creature, save that it starts attacking you before you cast the charm instead of waiting for you to cast it. Basically, an animal is charmable if the devs have set its "charmable" bit. No other factor applies, and the only way to test that is to try charming it -- there is no visual indication of whether an animal is charmable or not, although there is a bit of a pattern: to date, the only charmable creatures have been warm-blooded "natural" creatures (mammals or birds) of a size not significantly different from a person (no mice, no elephants). However, that is subject to change -- apparently last beta the fern lizard had its charmable bit set, however it was bugged, so whether it was really meant to be charmable or not is still an open question. If they've openned up charmability to more than just warm blooded natural creatures (and "Joe", the pet whiptail devourer we meet on the quest outside Beacon's Perch, would indicate they may very well be doing this), we may see a lot more charm options on release. One further note: In KoA (the starting area), at least two creatures have their charmable bit set, but also possess a skill called "Break Charm" so that when you try to charm them, they interrupt the attempt. If you had a way to interrupt their attempt to use break charm, or a skill like diversion to disable it after the first attempt, you could charm them easily. Alas, these skills are not generally available in KoA. Rumor has it that you can get around this with a high enough Beast Mastery (the skill either has a chance of failure, or they simply don't try). I don't believe this, but I don't believe it is false, either, I simply haven't tested it, nor has anyone that I trust (e.g. Charles Ensign), so I just don't know. I will be testing the theory come release, I'll let you know what I find out...

I for sure will try again to break that darn bear. *wondering if a mesmer might prove useful* IIRC, the Mesmer didn't really get any good interrupts in KoA. Several classes get skills with knockdown, but they don't recharge very quick. What I suspect we're going to see is those bears will also appear somewhere else (e.g. the new Southern Shiverpeaks area), and we'll be able to charm them there with the help of a properly skilled mesmer (Diversion would be the best bet I think).

The spider is an invalid target for the spell. The rabbit can't be targetted by anything. The bear is a valid target, but still has the Break Charm skill, making it neigh impossible to charm. Wolves, on the other hand, no longer have the Break Charm skill, and are thus easy to charm. It was nice to be able to get my wolf before getting to the Shiverpeaks. Guy went through the Academy with another guy with a wolf (he was a W/R), between the two of us, our two henchmen, and our two wolves, we creamed the other guys (final death toll 12-0) with a parting shout of "Wolf Power!"
No info on the lizard, I'm afraid I forgot to try that one...

Yep, I tried the large spiders (in catacombs) as well for taming, but they too are not animals and thus are not charmable

Well I was in the northlands last night and while there was a pack of Warthogs roaming the country side, I never saw a Fern Lizard... Has anyone found a lizard since release?

Over at the GW Guru forums, there is a post that there are at least 2 bears that spawn around the Iron Horse Mine, and apperently they do not use break charm... Good luck with the hunt...
Also, in the same thread, someone listed a Rune Lizard as a pet with no info on location.

Good news for bear lovers who never managed to tame one in KoA: reports of bear sightings are coming in from the Frozen Forest near the Iron Mines of Moladune in the Southern Shiverpeaks. Also reports of sightings in Lornar's Pass. They may in fact be common throughout the Southern Shiverpeaks.
I believe rumors of bears in the Northern Shiverpeaks near the Iron Horse Mine may be just corruptions of the reported first sightings near the Iron Mines of Moladune.

Latest rumor: in the Underworld, after setting the reaper free at the monument near the tortured spirit village, you will find an Elder Black Widow spider that can be charmed.

Latest rumor ... an Elder Black Widow spider that can be charmed. noooo I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. If I can charm a black widow, then Morbid can no longer be a warrior...she'll have to be Necro/Ranger

noooo I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. Can you pretend you didn't SEE it, too? Mwahaha! (Image courtesy of Spirits of War [SoW].) Actually, by the time you can get one of these, you've been through the Crystal Desert and beyond; you can pretty much switch secondary professions at will. Once you've done the secondary profession quests, apparently you can just go talk to the guys to switch, you don't need to redo them. I'd say there's definately a spider in your future, regardless of what your prefered secondary is...
