I hate to bother people with silly questions, but has anyone else had any problems loading the Rata Sum zone? I just made it there for the first time and both of my computers refuse to load it due to a graphics error. One of my computers in a brand spankin' new Dell, too. Our 6 year old desktop finally kicked the bucket, and lucky Kelkhil got to order a new one (he keeps bragging about his new quad-core to practically everyone he meets). Its kinda neat to play GW without choppy screen motions and weird streaks on the screen (we were actually able to crank up the video effects! Neato!). Anyone?

I haven't. But mine has been having problem with the post processing effects. I turned them off and things started running smoothly. Mine was so bad it would lock up the computer. I have a 8800 gt something or other and the latest graphics.
You turn off the post processing options in GW under the video options.

No recent problems with that map point, but I'll try again the next time I'm on.
Maybe a corrupt file on your hard drive? Does anyone know how to force GW to reload the content? I think I've seen that mentioned somewhere, but I forget where.
The only problem I've experienced lately is lag. While it's not that bad, it does seem to occur more often than, say, six months ago.

I kinda wonder if it's a bad download file. I have never been to that map point with either computer and I'm getting a graphics error with both. But just with that zone. Of course, now I can't play that character since she's stuck trying to load.......I have the people at NC working on it but they seem more interested in my computers (just sent them a Dx Diag for both puters). *sigh* I was sondering if there was a way to get rid of the files I've already loaded and try again. Guess I could always erase GW and re-install......blah!
Ha! just heard back from NC. Their only suggestion is to download the ENTIRE FILE CONTENT FOR GW (rather than waiting to enter a zone for the first time to download it). Oh, and I should have 4GB of free space and a lot of extra time before I do this. ACK!

Here's what the people at NC told me to do....
Guild Wars saves hard drive space and bandwidth by not downloading certain game files until you need them. For example, if you have never visited a certain zone, the game does not download the files for that zone until the first time that you go there. There are advantages to this, but there are also disadvantages. Downloading the necessary files can lead to higher load times when you first visit a zone. The game will also stream data in the background. If your connection has low bandwidth, this can lead to lag while you play.
There is a way to force Guild Wars to download all available data when launching the game instead of waiting to download it when it is needed. If you wish to do this, please start the game in the following fashion-
1. Click Start and then click Run
2. Click Browse and select your gw.exe program. It will be in "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars" by default.
3. The Run window should now read-
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"
Modify the line in the run window to read
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image
4. Press OK to run the game.
This will download all available game data before allowing you to play. Please be aware that you should have at least 4 GB of free space on your hard drive before starting this. The download will take a while. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
They don't know if this will work or not, but it's their only suggestion.

Laurelin, I loaded GW up on a new box and everyone had white cubes for heads. I sent a note to support and they said to do the same steps as above. Now it works just fine. Those steps could really fix the problem. Best to let it download on one computer over night, and then copy the gw.dat file from one computer to the other.

Nifty! Thanks for giving me a drop of hope! Though it would be kinda neat to see everyone with cube-heads.....

When I first installed GW (during the beta days) everyone was cubes -- big white cubes moving around... of course that was a poor graphics card -- but I think I still have screenies of it somewhere.

Well, it didn't work. The only other option at this point is to find Vista drivers for the video card in our dead computer and install that in our new Dell. With having to buy a new computer, new fridge, and bad head gasket on my car we really can't afford to go out and buy a new card. Right now we're both playing on Neverwinter Nights for something to do (yippee for cheesy graphics!).
(at least cubes can still play....my poor character is stuck in limbo land trying to render the Rata Sum graphics).
