On an impulse, I decided to take the recommendation of a friend. I stopped in to an AMC theater after work to see the new Bond film, Casino Royal. I was told that this was the best Bond film he'd ever seen, though it was a little dark.
I was disappointed right away during the opening credits. Normally there is a woman singing a beautiful vocal. This time it was a man singing. It was just wrong.
I was also struck by the almost total lack of Bond gadgets. About all they had was some GPS equipment, radio tracking bugs, and a defibrillator in the dash of his car. The car itself was wrecked before he had driven it a minute.
I am always less than impressed when films totally make stuff up. In this regard, Casino Royal was right on par. In one scene a buildings sprinkler system was set off with a manual override. Sprinklers NEVER work that way. They are ONLY set off by fire touching a particular sprinkler head and melting the plug holding back the water. If all sprinkler heads went off at once, there wouldn't be enough water pressure to actually put out a fire. They also used a carpenter's nail gun as a weapon. Nail guns won't ever fire unless they are being pressed up against a surface. It's a safety mechanism to prevent exactly what was happening in this film.
Casino Royal seemed to be a non-stop string of bad guys. Bond no sooner kills one and another appeared. Traditionally, there is one master mind and we follow him all throughout the film. In Casino Royal, we don't see the Master Mind until the last 2 minutes of the movie. We see him just long enough for Bond to put a bullet in him.
In Bond films, Bond always gets the girl in the end. This is the first one I've seen (I missed a few of the more recent ones) in which the girl dies in the end.
Casino Royal IS an action packed film with some really impressive stunt work. I would recommend it, but suggest that you wait until it comes out on DVD, unless you are a die hard Bond fan and/or like seeing lots of action on the big screen.
But as action packed as it is, it didn't strike me as a true Bond film and left me a little disappointed in the end.
