Nightpearl did the Beta this past weekend. Only for a few hours (because we just got a Wii and were busy playing that.) But he LOVED it. Perhaps because he's a huge Tolkienista. He said the world was incredibly true to the books and really deep. From looking over his shoulder the UI looked Wow-ish, but the graphics were MUCH more realistic. No clue if it's grindy or not.
I think I'd consider joining the next beta if there are some other bgn looking at it.

Not sure it's an open beta? The language is all about applications and whether they accept me. Boo.
I did read on the forums that they like taking a bunch of people from a guild. Since NP's been accepted perhaps they'll take us all!

From what I understand there is no open beta of Lord of the rings online. I signed up a month ago or so.

My wife applied for the (apparently not very) 'Open' Beta and is awaiting acceptance. A couple of weeks ago I got an invitation to participate in the beta through one of the game developer sites I subscribe to but I deleted it. Can't say for sure if it was a guaranteed acceptance or not, I haven't really got time for another game and I'm still too committed to GW to leave.

I was accepted for tyhe beta. I downloaded the client and am about to make a character. Dunno if I can play yet or not, but going to try. I will edit this in a bit if I am able to. Edit: I am in the gamer and playing... I made a toon on the Brandywine server. My toon's name is Tremor (what else?). He is a healer. Hope to see more of you there real soon!

Sweet. Nightpearl got an extra key for the Beta, so now he and I are both on Brandywine. My character is Aeron (of course) and his is Tinabriel. Human Captain and Elf Minstrel Respectively. I'll post details in BGN only as we have them.

The Download is 3.6gb and on my 5meg connection it's taking over 3 hours. If you haven't already started the download but plan to, don't put it off or you might miss out.

Yep, it's a long one. And the patches can take just as long.
Warning, this client is a resource HOG. It's supposed to be better when it goes live, but not so good so far.

I don't have any problems running it Aeron. I can actually do a virus scan while running it with no problems too.

Seems that you can automatically be accepted into the open beta by simply pre-ordering. I just submitted my order...

The more I play this game the more I like it! THere is SOOOOO much to it, but i am getting used to the play style. My only wish is to have more BGN and friends playing it with me. Gets kind of lonely in there.
I have started a BGN Kinship (Guild). I would love to turn it over to any BGNer who gets the game, just in case more BGN want to try and or get the game. I may get it, but not right away.
Yes you get to keep one toon no higher than lvl 15 from beta when the game releases (from my understanding).
Some of the crafting is kind of tricky to figure out at first, but all the info to do it is there, you just have to read it.
Thats it for now i guess. Look me or Aeron or Nightpearl up in the game when we are online. I know I would be happy to help anyone out!

There are some aspects to the game that I really like, but they are more than balanced by the things I think Turbine needs to work on.
1. It is very difficult to figure out where you need to go for your quests. Often, places are referenced by name but your map doesn't show the name. Or they'll tell you that you need to see "So and So" but give you no clue where he/she is.
2. The toons are UGLY. I tried to create a female elf. These people should be stunningly beautiful, but I spent a half an hour playing with the new character generator and everything I came up with made her look like a dork.
3. They seem to have locked onto the idea that your camera has to be facing the same direction as your toon. I have not seen my toon's face since I created it. This is also a problem in combat. You are required to face your opponent in order to be in combat. If your toon's back is up against a cliff, you almost can't fight because you can't get the camera behind your toon so it's facing your opponent.
4. The game won't move your toon into range for combat automatically. You have to manually navigate to your enemy before you can engage in combat. And if your opponent moves out of range, combat stops until you manually move closer again. Also, your toon isn't smart enough to turn to face your opponent. You must do that manually. Your opponent frequently moves around too so combat will suddenly stop until you manually dick around with turning your toon back into the combat.
5. It seems that the game was designed such that you need to spend countless hours in mindless combat in order to gain levels. I'm not sure, but I think you gain levels from quests, but no where near enough to sustain you without mindless combat.
6. Though the scenery is very impressive, the graphics quality is no where near as good as Guildwars.
7. The world is huge yet there seems to be no transportation system. If you want to get from one side of the map to the other, you need to start the hours long hike. I have found some horse tranport system that I haven't tried yet due to over pricing, but they'll only take you to places that you've been apparently. And I suspect that you still need to travel the distance. (Since I haven't done it, there are a lot of assumptions here)
